We live in a time where determining what’s ‘real’ or authentic has become very challenging very fast. How we got here doesn’t seem as important as where we’re going and what that means for your brand.

But first, I want to make it clear that I’m, in fact, real. I’m Katie. I joined Red Thinking in 2025, and I’m a proud deep (over) thinker with a sharp eye for detail. Like you, I’ve had a lot of questions about our new normal: What can’t AI do? How does that influencer do it!? Is this AI?

AI can write captions, generate images, and curate personalities in seconds. Influencers carefully edit their lives into highlight reels designed to sell an image, a lifestyle, or a product. Algorithms reward sameness. Filters smooth away flaws. And somewhere in all of that, being real can start to feel risky or even irrelevant.

But the truth is, brand authenticity has never been more valuable. Let me tell you why showing your authentic self is important.

The More Artificial the World Becomes, the More Humanity We Crave

There’s a reason behind-the-scenes moments or blooper reels perform so well. The glossy, filtered, PR-approved facade fades, and honesty is front and center. As technology advances, our hunger for genuine human connection grows. Especially from our favorite brands and influencers.

People are increasingly skilled at spotting what feels too scripted, overly polished, or performative in branding and marketing services. We might engage with it briefly, but we don’t trust it—and trust is what builds brand loyalty, connection, engagement, and impact.

Have you heard of The Uncanny Valley theory? In 1970, a Japanese professor of robotics, Masahiro Mori, identified this phenomenon as our brain rejecting things that feel close to human-like but aren’t quite (the mom from Smart House, anyone 🤖).

Authenticity in marketing cuts through the noise and uneasiness because it’s imperfect. It feels lived. When everything else is optimized, your humanity becomes your differentiator.

Authenticity Attracts Eyeballs and Builds Trust

AI and influencer culture are excellent at grabbing attention and have become effective social media and marketing strategies. Yet, authenticity is what keeps that interest.

McDonald’s learned that lesson with its Christmas AI ad fiasco last December. “This commercial single-handedly ruined my Christmas spirit,” said one social media user from the barrage of negative comments. It was one of those turn-off-the-comments-quick situations. And McDonald’s eventually took down the ad altogether.

As Mori noted, when something looks or feels almost human but is also slightly off, our brain tells us  something isn’t quite right. And when that feeling comes from a brand’s marketing, it sticks with you and can undermine trust.

A Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions study of 1,000 respondents from the USA, the UK, and Germany found that 80% didn’t trust AI. And when shown ads with and without AI-generated content, the AI-labeled ads got worse ratings across the board, docked for appeal, credibility, and purchase intent.

Here’s the thing AI will never get: Life is messy, but also beautiful. Humans want to see humans. That’s why a brand authenticity strategy is crucial to building trust in a world where anyone and anything can generate content.

Being Yourself is a Strategic Advantage

The influencer era has taught us how to curate. The next era will reward those who can connect. There’s no algorithm for your story, your values, your perspective, or your voice. AI can replicate patterns, but it can’t replicate your intuition, empathy, or lived context.

When you show up as yourself:

  • You attract the right audience, not just a large one
  • You create deeper, more meaningful engagement
  • You stand out without trying to compete on volume or virality

Authenticity narrows the room and that’s a good thing. It invites dialogue, creates intentionality, and shows what you stand for. Acknowledge those mistakes, share your lessons learned, and speak in a voice that sounds like a real person, not a marketing prompt. Your team and followers will thank you.

The Future Belongs to the Real

The future of AI in marketing will continue to evolve. Influencer culture will keep shifting. But the one thing that can’t be automated is genuine human connection. In a world full of artificial voices, being real is a quiet act of leadership that sets you apart.

And the people who’ll stand out most in the future won’t be the loudest, the most polished, or the most optimized—they’ll be the most true. If you want to hear more about how this can affect your branding and marketing services, let’s chat.
