More Than Just Work: The Magic of Connecting with Our Team
When I interviewed with Red Thinking, the opportunity for flexible work arrangements was a major selling point. I know that, for me, this type of setup creates the best framework for work-life balance, and that is reflected in the quality of my work. What I learned from more and more conversations in the interview process and, ultimately, once I joined the team was that this more flexible setup also really works for the Red Thinking team. Sure, this is because they (now we!) work extremely collaboratively through systems and tools all day, every day. Even more importantly, it’s because the teams’ relationships with each other are so strong.
“Exciting” is an understatement for my first few months at Red Thinking. Being new, you’re navigating new clients, learning new systems, and figuring out who on your team is your go-to for a laugh or a gut check. In my time here, I’ve witnessed first hand how relationships can build and thrive within a culture that prioritizes its people.
What I didn’t know was how that team dynamic would translate to the in-person 3-day company retreat in Annapolis, MD I had heard so much about. Spoiler alert: it was better than I could have imagined.
Here’s what I learned at our retreat and why, in my humble opinion, every digital and branding agency should implement an in-person retreat in 2025.
Thoughts From a First-Timer at the Red Thinking Retreat
I love socializing, so I went into the retreat excited to see my colleagues in-person, catch up, and share those memories made possible by being in the same room. I went in with an open mind, but I had high hopes for any event with my colleagues Shay, president and owner, and Hanna, account and operations coordinator, at the helm.
From the minute I arrived, it felt like the team had known each other for years (okay, some of them have!). The retreat agenda was jam-packed with bonding activities, but, fortunately for us all, not the type of bonding activities that trigger eye rolls. The focus was clearly on spending time together, strengthening already strong bonds, celebrating a year of success, and feeling inspired for a new year to come.
From the scavenger hunt (a retreat highlight for me), where everyone’s competitiveness and creativity came out full steam ahead, to incredible meals and a Secret Santa that spoke to the thoughtfulness of each Red Thinker and just how well they know each other, this was a retreat packed with meaningful connection. We laughed, chatted, learned new things about each other, and came together in a way that would strengthen our collaboration and work. I learned how I could contribute and grow with this incredible team, and I was welcomed with open arms by people I had never met in real life.
Why Prioritizing Team Relationships (On and Offline) is a Key to Success
The company retreat reinforced the importance of open communication and teamwork, and it reminded me how valuable it is to build genuine relationships through observing and participating in real-time exercises where we supported one another in achieving shared goals. Whether it was rooting for Sean to win just one round of Bunco (he eventually did!), “Team Jolly’s” phenomenal effort to (respectfully) crush “Team Merry” in the scavenger hunt competition, or finding the most festive bar/restaurant for the afternoon in Annapolis, we did just that.
Over the short time we had together, I can even more clearly see myself growing with Red Thinking through the support of my team, taking on new challenges, and helping to build upon the already positive, supportive environment.
Coming together sparked new ideas and encouraged us to think creatively about both our work and our client relationships. We left our Annapolis retreat truly aligned on goals and values, and I’m excited to be a part of the innovation, teamwork, and positive impact as it takes shape in 2025 for both our clients and the company.
We may not see each other every day, but we are cementing incredible relationships that empower all of us to thrive both personally and professionally.
So, go book your team’s next retreat! And don’t hesitate to reach out if you need scavenger hunt inspo.
